Joseph – From the Well of Darkness to the Father’s Throne

Dear brothers and sisters, the story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis shows the path of a man who is led from the dark well of betrayal and darkness, through slavery and prison, to the place of responsibility and finally to the restoration of the family. It is the path of individuation, of turning back to the Heavenly Father, and of the liberation of the soul through the Logos.

Joseph - The Colorful Robe and the Beginning of the Journey

The robe of many colors is the outward sign of inner complexity. It signifies the ability to remain true to oneself and to bear responsibility in different areas of reality. This distinction arouses the envy of the brothers. Envy is the ancient sin: the refusal to accept one's own measure and to honor the good in others. Thus begins the descent.

The Well of Darkness – The Stage of Nigredo

The brothers throw him into the well and sell him. This is the alchemical stage of Nigredo – the darkness in which the old must die. The well, slavery, and the dungeon are places of trial. Here, it is decided whether a person succumbs to resentment and bitterness or remains true to a higher purpose. The one who is saved remains unharmed. He does not allow himself to be corrupted. He acts as if existence were justified and aligns his actions with the good.

The Preservation of Character in Servitude

In foreign lands and in prison, healthy manhood is revealed: the strength to withstand chaos without becoming chaotic himself; the ability to assume responsibility where others have relinquished it; loyalty to the Father in Heaven and the rejection of sin. Through this attitude, the dungeon becomes a place of order. The dreams that arise from the unconscious are interpreted as the language of the Logos—the ordering word that simultaneously kills and gives life. It kills resentment and self-righteousness. It awakens the soul to clarity and mercy.

The Elevation and the Throne of Responsibility

Through the correct interpretation of dreams, he ascends. He becomes steward and saves the land and the surrounding peoples from famine. This happens not through cunning, but through faithfulness to the Logos. The Logos is the word of conversion: the word that cuts through the old order of envy and lies and establishes a new, wholesome order. The elevation is the fruit of the preserved attitude. The throne here is not a place of rule for its own sake, but the place of responsibility before the Father in Heaven.

The Restoration of the Family

When the brothers come in their distress, the saved one recognizes them and tests them. Finally, he reveals himself and speaks the decisive word: What you intended to do wrong, God has turned to good. He forgives without denying the truth. The family—father and mother, brothers and sons—is restored. Herein lies the Catholic orientation and the affirmation of the healthy family: the sanctification of the home and the respect for the natural order of mother and father. Healthy masculinity and healthy femininity find their complement in this reunion.

The Black Madonna and Sophia

In this event, Sophia appears—wisdom, whose image is the Black Madonna. She represents the path to healthy femininity: the ability to dwell in the darkness of the soul, to bear suffering, and yet to bear witness to the light of the Logos. The Black Madonna reminds us that the soul achieves wholeness only through the acceptance of the shadow and submission to the Heavenly Father.

The Turning to the Father and the Liberation of the Soul

The story of Joseph is the path of individuation in the sense of Carl Gustav Jung's teachings: the narrow ego dies, the shadow is integrated, the Self emerges. The soul is freed for service to the whole. This is the turning to the symbolic Father, the God in Heaven. The Logos is the sword that simultaneously kills and gives life. It kills resentment, self-righteousness, and bitterness. It awakens responsibility, clarity, and mercy.
